2 vehicles break through ice on Mississippi Lake near Ottawa
Police are investigating a fatality after two vehicles, in two separate incidents, broke through the ice on Mississippi Lake, 60 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, early Sunday morning.
The Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report at around 3:45 a.m. about a vehicle that broke through the ice near Craig Shore. When police arrived at the scene, they found an all-terrain vehicle, with lights on, partially submerged in the lake.
While searching for occupants, police found another vehicle, a Volkswagen sedan, which had been the subject of the original call, completely submerged.
The three passengers in the ATV managed to escape with minor injuries, police said.
A male passenger, inside the submerged vehicle, was taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia. A second passenger in the same vehicle is believed to be dead, police said.
Police said the two incidents are separate events and are not related.
The incident involving the ATV is being investigated as a minor injury collision and the second incident is being investigated as a fatal collision, police said.
Divers are expected on scene Monday, police said.
Police are asking the public to avoid Mississippi Lake.
